For a long time now there has been a massive debate on Arsenal, Arsene, and the spending philosophy of the club and the manager. Gunnertalk made several episodes around this matter, one being ‘Wenger, please spend some money'.
Its been frustrating, annoying, people have complained, a million blogs have been written, polls have been cast, Wenger out, Wenger's lost the plot…. But then there’s two sides of the coin! The die hard faithful that seem to have become ‘Wenger supporters’ more then ‘Arsenal Supporters’ (that shows the extent of what people feel about him). They say ‘in Wenger we trust’ and no matter what he does, even if he hasn’t won anything for five years, these fans point to what he has brought to the club, made the club. And this feeling is so big he can actually afford to never win a trophy ever again!
The debate is the biggest of recent times and the fans are really divided on this. I never know, nowadays, if that Arsenal fan over there will be a pro Wenger or not. It’s probably now at 60/40 in his favour but has shown a big decline of pro Wenger.
Most of us are in agreement now that its not ridiculous amounts we want to see him spend. We’re not asking him to spend what the likes of Manchester City spend (Well that’s just a joke and a waste of a sentence so let's not even say it – that’s never ever going to be the case). ‘We just want him to spend a few million and back up what is an already great bunch of players that he has developed.
However, Wenger is the boss, he will never bow down to the pressures of what’s being said. A board member couldn’t even say anything to Arsene, and that's what makes him different! He is not one of these managers that gets the boot after a season or two for not delivering. He is like gold dust to Arsenal for what he has done in transforming the club.
I think all the talk or complaining about Wenger should end now. I myself was sceptical at times of the man, I myself thought at one point that he was just being stubborn and refused to accept the error of his ways. But then I saw this interview on football focus.
Now, he even makes this difficult, with his very clever ‘philosopher’ ways - he covers himself so when questioned ‘but you said’ he will just reiterate, ‘what I actually said was…..’ and if you rewind the tape, he’s spot on. He said it! He is extremely intelligent, and remembers everything he’s quoted, to the finest detail, so don’t think you can get him in a corner because you can't. He is one step ahead – all the time.
So in this exclusive video he talks about the buying of players and when questioned on the amounts he is prepared to spend he makes categorically clear that he would not spend the sort of money that we all wish he would! So let's stop complaining – or stop supporting Arsenal!
We all have Arsenal in our hearts as our own and it's not hard for us to be so upset when we fail. Well if we feel an affiliation to this club this much – you can be sure Arsene feels it even more. Yes even more. Sorry, you may have your blood boiling now and want to say you are the biggest Arsenal fan in the world but Arsene is not only the manager of this football club but he is a fan - he did not leave when Real or Barcelona came knocking. It's more than money for him. He doesn’t want a bucket full of money to just throw everywhere. It goes completely against his whole belief about football.
He chose Arsenal for his project and since he did, he won a lot, he gave us the Double Double and the Invincibles, he has brought in countless players from nothing to be the best in the world (Henry, Vera and Pirès to name just a few) and now he’s trying to create this branch of football that isn’t all about money, saying (and I quote) ‘we run the football club like it should be run,’ 'our players are educated here’ and ‘we manage to fight against these teams that just buy at ridiculous prices’.
When asked ‘would you spend 20 million on a player', his answer: ‘I’m not against it but first you must be able to afford it, it's wages as well as the transfer fee and spoils the balance, also there are not many players in the world that can justify those prices’.
Straight from the horses mouth so let's stop speculating, is it Arsene? Is it Arsenal? Are his hands tied or does he have money? Let's accept, he has as much money as he wants, but it's not his game. Imagine if he got annoyed with all of us tomorrow, he could easily just say ‘you know what, sod this, fine ok here you go, 25 mill for him, 35 mill for him, spend spend spend,' then players come knocking on his office door ‘we’ll if he’s getting 180 grand a week why aren’t I?’ (Cashly Cole scenario)… 'No problem son, here you go, have the same, in fact sod it, it's not my money, everyone from this day forward is on 200 grand a week OK!'
No, he won't ever do that, because he is an Arsenal fan and he cares about the welfare of his club. He could not see his club slide down just like all the others, then rely on some foreign billionaire to make it his toy and be at their mercy forever.
So I’m afraid it is in Wenger we trust or move on and support another club! Go on, Chelski are just round the corner, solid London Club who win things. Go ahead, they are much more posh round there too, be my guest. Oh what's that?, umming and arring I hear now... Why? Because SHIT CLUB NO HISTORY – that’s why!
It’s more than just running a football club the man's trying to do, he’s trying to create a revolution! And we should embrace it – it’s like a story of Good verses Evil, the Jedi vs the Darkside… Viva Wenger's revolution (he is French after all!).
It’s either that or just continue to be annoyed that we don’t buy big established players, that transfer windows open and close with out Arsen even popping his head in to see what’s going on. He doesn't do transfers, he does finding! and he does it well. I’m afraid this is the way it is and a case of either you’re with him or against him! Personally I’m with him because as frustrating as it can be, we’re not half a good team and a club that’s run very well. And it will make it all the better when we beat these splash cash billionaire teams that wouldn’t be here tomorrow if there billionaire sugar daddy got bored and left them!
