Marouane-Chamakh-goal-Wolves-v-Arsenal_2525502

By George Sezer

I had a dream that Arsenal scored a goal almost straight from the kick off against Wolves.  It was just what the doctors had ordered after a couple of dodgy results and performances, scoring an early goal in a dodgy away trip... Wait, this was for real, who says dreams don't come true.

After a typical build up from the back, Rociscky, playing in place of Nasri made a strong run through their midfield, Song who was somehow appeared in right wing position, received the ball from the little Mozart; bended in a cross like Beckham. Bread and butter for somebody like Chamakh who planted a textbook header to the bottom corner for the quickest goal in the Premiership this season. The match clock showed 39 seconds.

Arshavin closed down their centre back (no, you haven’t misread it) shortly after our first goal, forcing him to a mistake, going through for one and one with their goalkeeper but undid all his good work by shooting straight at the keeper from close range. Fabregas did the same soon after, when he combined with Arshavin on the left and pouncing on the a loose clearance from the little Russians low cross as Arsenal looked like they meant business in the early stages. Regaining his place in the team, Arshavin seemed to have profited from the little rest he had on the bench last week.

Wolves didn’t trouble our defence in the first half, apart from couple of crosses, especially the deflected one that Fabianski clawed away brilliantly, stopping an almost certain goal as Hunt was waiting at the far post unmarked  to head the ball in to an empty net.

Second half was a different story as both teams created plenty of chances; first Sagna put a great block in after Wilshere’s slip created an opening for them, then Fabregas pulled his low shot narrowly wide after Rosicky’s found him just inside their box.

Fabianski looking assured despite his mistake at the weekend pulled a great save from Doyle’s 20 yarder. From the resulting corner Rosicky, sticking to his task at the post, cleared off the line.

In the 65th minute sharper looking Arshavin cut in from left and fired a low right foot shot against the post. 10 minutes later Djourou, playing in place of suspended Koscielny wasted a great chance to kill the game off when he couldn’t score from six yards after a corner kick.

When Chamakh lost a midfield battle late in the game I feared the worst as Wolves broke but fortunately Doyle shot was wide at the end of their attack. As I thought that was that - I should’ve have known better not to think that way after decades of watching football – they created one last opening when their goalie launched a long ball towards our 18 yard box deep into injury time. squeaky bum time; the ball got nodded towards our penalty spot by Berra and got laid back to him at the edge of the box, his low and hard shot was destined for bottom corner until Fabianski’s strong right arm got to it first. Not only it was a great, timely save but he held onto it and distributed a lovely throw to Rosicky on the right who in turn passed the ball inside to Fabregas. The captain marvel timed his pass over the top for Chamakh to perfection. The way the big forward stayed onside before going through to score was top class; Wolves 0 – Arsenal 2, game over, goodnight.

Oh, and I am delighted to announce my man of the match; Fabianski!
