Arsenal's accounts at the end of last season (May 2010)

By Steve Coral

Okay ladies and gents, this is a first. Those who read GT regularly will know that my Arsenal shaped obsession is solely down to my (much) older brother Steve. It’s all his fault. For this sometimes I love him up to the sky and back, sometimes I’d like to punch his silly face repeatedly. (Last Sunday being one of those times.) It is he who regularly curses our players with the weight of his money (and golfers eh Nigel?) but he has been a Gooner longer than God and supports me through my Emirates dramas with a rolling eye and a cuddle. Here is his take……. (Lindsay Sheehan)

IT’S A BUSINESS!!!

Having been a voyeur for so long, I now feel I cannot stand by any longer, cos I’m mad as hell & I just can’t take it anymore.

So here is my maiden blog:

It has been said about me, quite often, that I am somewhat of a pessimist. True, but what they should also say, is that I’m also a paranoid cynic. What worries me about the current state of Arsenal FC (note that I didn’t say the team) is that I’m not sure that the powers that be are all that interested in winning things. I know this sounds obscure, but think about it.
Arsenal FC are making money at a rate of knots that would shame a 3rd world dictatorship. Champions league qualification being the holy grail, how much extra money would have been generated from winning the darn thing? Only 3 more sets of gate receipts & a bit more prize money. Same with the premier league, but not even the extra gates. A drop in the ocean of money that AFC is awash in.

So it seems to me, & here I have to refer you back to my 3rd paragraph, that there is very little incentive (other than to placate us mug fans) to go out & spend many millions on new players in order to win things, 4th place & a couple of half decent cup runs is all that is required. After all, don’t forget, (as they keep telling us) football is a business now.

And, sadly, it seems that the fans just don’t matter & have no voice. I could of course protest by not renewing my season ticket & not contributing my many thousands of pounds each year into the snarling, grasping, avaricious hands of the board, (£5.50 for a hot dog. A HOT DOG!) But how many thousands of us would be more than happy to take my place? No more protest, than spoiling my ballot paper.

Over to you Stan.
